Bringing Optometry to the Evidence-based Health Care Conference

The Evidence-based Optometry project was represented at the Evidence-based Health Care conference in Taormina, Sicily from October 30th to November 2nd 2013. The conference is organised by the International Society for Evidence-based Health Care, whose aim is to “develop and encourage research in evidence-based health care and to promote and provide professional and public education in the field”. The 159 attendees at the conference represented 30 countries, including 13 delegates from Australia. Catherine Suttle gave a presentation on the EBO project and its results to date, including the project’s web site, the optometry-specific Fresno test and methods for evidence-based practice education in optometry. While several health disciplines were represented, Catherine encountered no other eye care practitioners at the conference, but delegates were interested in the implications of our optometry-related work for EBP education in other disciplines. Catherine really enjoyed the conference, with lots of stimulating discussion on keeping up with the latest research, using pre-appraised evidence, the use of guidelines, limitations by governance, and the use of various forms of evidence (from expert opinion to the best available research) as the basis for practice and policy. We are already looking forward to the next one, about the same time in 2015. Maybe see you there…
